Kale SMS Privacy Policy
Effective date: June 22, 2026
This policy explains how Daso, Inc. ("Kale," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and protects phone numbers in connection with text (SMS) messaging. It covers SMS, the urgent caregiver alerts and the family memory of our text conversations described below. It does not describe our broader product data practices.
Collection of phone numbers
We collect your phone number only when you voluntarily provide it, for example when you create an account or sign up to receive notifications. By providing your phone number, you opt in to receive SMS messages from Kale. Urgent alert texts are a separate opt-in: they go only to a grown-up who turned on SMS backup, and only to a number confirmed as theirs.
How we use phone numbers
We use your phone number to send you transactional text messages related to your Kale account, such as account, safety, and notification messages. We do not send marketing text messages. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply.
Urgent caregiver alerts
If something a child asks Kale sounds like they may need help right now, the tablet tells them to go to a grown-up nearby. When the family has given consent for urgent alerts, Kale also alerts the family’s grown-ups: first with a notification in the Kale grown-up app, then, if no grown-up has opened the alert after about 2 minutes, with a text to each grown-up who turned on SMS backup. SMS backup is never on by default; a grown-up turns it on with an unticked box on the consent page or in the Kale grown-up app. At most 5 alert texts a day go to one number.
What an alert contains
An alert says which child it is about and that something they asked sounded urgent. It uses the child’s first name when the family’s consent covers the child’s first name and the name is unambiguous in the family; otherwise it says “your child”. It never contains what the child said or typed, and Kale keeps no recording or transcript for the alert.
Who delivers alerts
App notifications go through Expo, Apple (Apple Push Notification service) and Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging). Alert texts go through our SMS providers, Twilio and Surge. They deliver alerts on our behalf. After a text reaches its final delivery status, we delete the message text stored at Twilio; Surge keeps messages under its own retention terms; Expo keeps notification receipts for 24 hours.
How long alerts are kept
Kale keeps each alert (which child, when, and who opened it) for 30 days and then deletes it. Alerts are deleted sooner when the family’s data or that child’s profile is deleted, and a grown-up’s delivery records go when that grown-up’s data is erased. Codes that confirm a phone number are deleted once used, and at the latest after 24 hours.
Turning alerts off
Turn off Urgent alerts for the family in the Kale grown-up app, or withdraw the whole consent. Each grown-up can turn off app notifications and SMS backup just for themselves. Alerts can be wrong, late or missing, for example when the tablet is offline. Kale is not an emergency service: in an emergency, call your local emergency number.
Family memory
When you text with Kale, it may remember your area (a city or neighbourhood, never an address or location data), the do-together ideas it suggested and what you reported back, so its next idea fits your family. Never your messages, your child’s words or their creations. Text STOP MEMORY at any time to stop it and erase what was remembered. Kale also uses what it remembers about each child on the tablet to suggest Explore topics there; nothing is sent to Kale Cloud for these suggestions.
Kale nutzt außerdem, was es sich auf dem Tablet über jedes Kind merkt, um dort Explore-Themen vorzuschlagen; für diese Vorschläge wird nichts an Kale Cloud gesendet.
Sharing
We share your phone number only with our SMS providers, Twilio and Surge, who deliver messages on our behalf and are subject to their own privacy policies. We do not sell, rent, or share your phone number or SMS opt-in consent with any other third party for their own marketing or any other purpose. SMS opt-in information and consent are never shared with third parties.
Opting out
You can stop receiving messages at any time by replying STOP. Reply STOP ALERTS to any alert text to stop urgent alert texts to your number while other Kale texts continue. Reply HELP for help. Once you reply STOP, we will not send you further SMS messages; STOP ALERTS stops only urgent alert texts.
Your data
You can ask for a copy of the data Kale holds on your family, or for its deletion. You can do this in the Kale grown-up app, under Privacy, or here, without the app.
Enter the email address or phone number of your Kale account. We send a confirmation link to it, and your request counts only once you open the link and confirm it, so nobody can ask on your behalf. We send the link only if the address or number belongs to a Kale account; this page shows the same message either way.
